tmcl,

All verses were sung with no changes in wording.

Interesting. As a CSist, I especially denied being a wretch whenever I heard Amazing Grace. I still deny being a wretch only because I don't think I'm good enough to be considered one.

This past Sunday the hymn "Amazing Grace" was sung as a hymn in The Mother Church Sunday School, and as the solo in the church services. All verses were sung with no changes in wording.

This Sunday, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazing_Grace was sung as the solo at TMC with changes (I wish there was a strikeout feature):

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a [soul] like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

'Twas grace that taught my heart to [love],
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
[I] have already come;
'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

When we've been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we'd first begun.

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a [soul] like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

I thought that might be of interest. (btw, I dont' think I've ever heard "all verses" sung anywhere!)

B!X,

The pendulum has obviously swung back a ways in the other direction, sorry to say.

B!X,

This Sunday, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazing_Grace was sung as the solo at TMC with changes (I wish there was a strikeout feature):

I can't do anything about TMC choices regarding rewriting history or Scripture, but the new forum software does allow certain capabilities like adding strukeout strikeout to the IFCodes.

You can also add links with descriptions using the IFCode dropdown. I just swapped the straight url code for the url code with description in the shortcut list, but both are still available on the dropdown. Thus, your message could have appeared like this:

B!X, I think that the part in the 3rd stanza which says "I have already come" is actually correct.  I've been raised in Evangelical Christian churches (I currently go to a Southern Baptist church), and I've always heard it sung this way, not with "We."  I also just checked on www.cyberhymnal.org, and that's how it's written there as well.

Yesterday's solo at TMC (compared with the orignal), as best as I could understand ... I don't know why this interests me... but here goes:

Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling Love is healing,
Calling for you and for me Healing both you and me;
See, on the portals He’s waiting and watching Stand at the portal of thought,  ever knowing,
Watching Love cares for you and for me.

    Refrain:
    Come home, come home, Right here, and now,
    Ye who are weary, come home believe and know;
    Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling Love is healing,
    Calling, O sinner, come home!  Healing both you and me!

Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading Love is calling,
Pleading  Calling for you and for me?
Why should we linger and heed not His mercies Love's mercy,
Mercies  Mercy for you and for me?

    Refrain

Time is now fleeting, the moments are passing,
Passing from you and from me;
Shadows are gathering, deathbeds are coming,
Coming for you and for me.

Oh, for the wonderful love He has that is promised,
Promised for you and for me!
Though we have sinned, He has there's mercy and pardon,
Pardon for you and for me.

    Refrain

humming, then modified Refrain "Softly and tenderly" replacing "Earnestly, tenderly"

Changing the words in a hymn is nothing to redefining words found in the Bible, ala S&H pages 579-599. It's all part of the CS mindset that if you don't like what the words the author used, you can just change them to something more to your liking.

B!X,

I'm fascinated by the changes in wording, too. They powerfully illustrate how CS de-emphasizes Jesus. What a travesty and a tragedy.
