Fully Relying On God for Salvation

Though this exchange took place over a year ago, I'd like to add a note.

1. One of the most articulate and effective CS practitioners I've ever known made the decision at about age 70 to have cataract surgery. He did not want his usefulness as a CS prac to be diminished, and he also needed to be there for his wife, who was beginning, I think, to show signs of Altzheimers. Some of the church people were quite appalled, but they had to go along with his decision and "suffer it to be so now."

Some years ago I was working at the Reading Room one afternoon and received a call from the hospital, asking if someone could go up and read with a very elderly (over 100) CStist. The listed practitioners had refused, saying they couldn't treat a patient who was under medical care. I said I would go.

I didn't recognize the woman, since she was without the black wig she usually wore, and she certainly didn't recognize me. All I did was hold her hand and say the Lord's Prayer and sing Shepherd Show Me How To Go. She dropped off into a peaceful sleep.

The nurse told me that it was the first time the woman had had any sleep since being admitted. She asked me what I did. Well, she saw what I "did." What I did mentally was to affirm the presence of Love and I don't even recall what other CS boilerplate came to mind. My experience has always been that when it works, CS goes beyond verbalization, that it's a feeling more than a logical conclusion. I'd like to think that this woman's passing a few days later was a rounding out, a peaceful end to a life well lived. ". . . Old men and close of day know dark is right/ Do not go gentle into that good night."

There is much we can all learn about being truly human.

Anonymous,

It was very kind of you to go to the hospital to read to the elderly woman. I'm sure she was feeling guilty and abandoned since the practitioners refused to help her. You gave her the comfort and acceptance she needed by singing her a CS hymn, allowing her the mental release she needed to sleep. Your gift of love was simple, yet profound in this woman's life!

What you did was truly Christian. You showed love and compassion. You put these feelings into action.
