I completely agree with this position. My aunt was a CS practitioner who became ill and could not make a demonstration over what kept getting worse and causing almost unbearable pain. Finally, my uncle demanded that she seek medical attention and she was immediately put on pain medications for what was diagnosed as inoperable cancer. When he contacted other CS members of her branch church and asked them to visit her, only one agreed to do so. The others replied that to do so would be an approval of her decision to seek medical attention as she had abandoned her reliance on Divine Science. All through my upbringing and even into my Primary Class instruction, this has bothered me. From the time I was a teenager and made my first serious reading of S&H, it was clear to me that MBE understood that one cannot demonstrate what one does not yet understand spiritually, and that the decision to seek assistance outside of CS is a personal one having only to do with the individual's understanding of God. Further, I have never read anything written by MBE that suggests that an individual decision to seek medical attention makes one less a CS, and that no CS should suffer any penalty public or private for doing so. I think if MBE were here with us today she would be absolutely bewildered in the face of what has been done in her name. Yet, I am comforted by one of my grandmother's favorite sayings: "Never judge a religion by the people who practice it." ( She was a CS.) BMG
