The monitor's religious article titled "The Second Noel" discusses the second coming of the Christ was through MBE.  I thought there was a severe theological split among Christian Scientists regarding this issue.  Didn't this idea cause the bruhaha over the Bliss Knapp book?  If the Monitor is printing this idea in its religious article, is the party line now?

I don't think the problem with the Bliss Knapp book involved the second coming occuring THROUGH Mrs. Eddy. As I understand it, some people thought the book came dangerously close to deifying Mrs. Eddy, and that's what they objected to. (With that said, I'll add that Eddy did teach her students that she had a specific place in biblical prophecy. She allowed some of her "inner circle" -- including Bliss' father Ira -- to conclude that she was the "woman of the apocalypse" in Revelation 12. For details, click here to find my book on amazon.com, and then do a search on "Bliss Knapp" using the "search inside this book" feature under the book's picture.)

The CS Monitor article talks about the Second Noel coming through Eddy in the form of the Comforter:

"Although Jesus' words were for eternity, their spiritual sense and the systematic healing ability that came with them were lost over the centuries....So, in a sense, there had to be a "second Noel." Jesus promised another would come in his name, repeating his words, ideas, and works (see John 14:25, 26). He called it the Comforter. It would systematize what he shared and teach the specific rules he taught generally. Students of the Bible in the light of Christian Science believe this second appearing of the Christ took place in 1866, when Mary Baker Eddy discovered this theology. It came as her thought broke through the grip of traditional science, theology, and medicine to discern the same world-challenging and world-changing truth Jesus had introduced almost 2,000 years before. Her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" explains it." (CS Monitor, "The Second Noel," http://www.csmonitor.com/2007/1231/p18s01-hfcs.html)

I think this just says that the ideas of CS came through MBE, not that she was the second Noel. So I don't think this is any different than standard CS teaching.
