I've heard CSists make the statement that Jesus never said he was God (in fact, I used to say that myself). I'm providing a link to a nine minute YouTube presentation that addresses the issue. The presentation is a response to Muslims, but I think it's a good response to anyone who doesn't believe in the deity of Jesus.

Here's the link to Islamic Arguments #1, presented by Alpha and Omega Ministries.

Linda,

He mentions the generally "better argumentation" of the cults in comparison with the typical Muslim argumentation against orthodox Christianity, but his evidence of the Islamist's apologetic shows it is the same as the typical CSist's apologetic- eisegetical Bible study featuring cherry-picked verses taken out of the larger context they were spoken in, & out of the larger context of God's Word as a whole.

I guess there are two ways men have founded the nature of the god they serve. Since ancient times, men have created, & therefore attributed their own nature to supposed supernatural beings- demonstrated most unambiguously by the Greek & Roman gods who had the same measure of righteousness inherent in man- just greater power. Men brought God down to their measure of rectitude & thus attempted to make Him human & fraught with frailties- like them. These anthropomorphous gods were created by man in man's image & likeness in a "bottom up" sort of revelation of the divine, flipping Genesis 1:26 on its head. God did not leave it a mystery how man came to be in the state he's in today after Gen. 1:26, He gave us Gen. 3 to remove the quandary. And He also gives us the highly conspicuous witness of Scripture to prove that Jesus' 33 years of human existence was indeed a visitation from God.

I think CS likes the idea of a strictly human Jesus because it makes His works of healing more attainable for them- this being the fundamental "demonstration" of CS. But true Christianity holds to the "top down" or exegetical manner of God's revelation- we only know of Him what He has chosen to reveal of Himself; we must take this as sufficient & hold to it alone.

I consider John 10:22-39 to be one of the most relevant passages regarding whether Jesus claimed divinity. In this passage He explains who hears His voice and why. Some of those who did not believe Him asked Him to state His position plainly. He accommodated them saying, "I and the Father are one." The crowd understood His claim and believed it to be blasphemy. They picked up rocks to stone Jesus as was believed appropriate in that time and place regarding someone who made such an outrageous claim, were it not true.

A different C.S. (Lewis) than what we usually discuss proposed that if you accept the Scriptural account there are really only three possibilities, Jesus was either a liar, a mad man, or exactly who He claimed to be.

Zoarean,

Thanks for providing the link to your blog article, The Glory of Jesus Christ. (Note to anyone who follows the link: the link takes you to the bottom of the article where people can make comments -- don't miss the article itself, which is above the comments.)

You did a great job of compiling a long list of both Old Testament and New Testament passages that clearly point to the deity of Jesus. You have provided a great resource for anyone who wants to take a serious look at this issue.
