The "Christian Science In the News" thread has become very long, and covers a large number of issues.
From time to time, there is news concerning well-known people who are Christian Scientists, are associated with CS, or are reputed to be "Scientists." This thread is intended to focus on such people. Although my primary focus is on celebrities and public figures, I think that news about well-known persons inside the Christian Science organization (TMC officials, highly popular practioners and teachers, etc.) could also be covered here.
Anything relevent concerning well-known people in CS can be posted here, including matters related to their health and deaths.[/i
I urge people to cite sources and provide links whenever possible. This is not a forum for gossip, innuendo, and speculation!

Prominent CS Congressman leaving CS?
Christopher Shays, of Darien, Connecticut, and a Principia graduate, has been a U.S. Congressman since 1987, and is regarded as a "moderate" (i.e. liberal) Republican.
In an interview with The Connecticut Post on line, he stated, among a number of other subjects, that although he "considers (him)self a religious person" and prays, "but that his faith has been shaken and he is no longer a practicing Christian Scientist."
The article also discusses Rep. Shays' strong support for President Bush's War on Terrorism.
<< I believe we are imperiled by Islamic terrorists. Believing that, what do we do about it?" Shays asked. "I've changed my views about the need to confront evil." Although circumspect, Shays clearly has been shaken by the weight of war and his involvement in it. >>
Contributor's observation: War is an arena where one should contlemplate intensely on the matters of good and evil. I contend that CS, as a doctrine and as a "world view," is ill equipped to really address it. This article presents a more deeply thinking politician than I had previously understood him to be. A last note: He was a friend of my late father's.

I am no fan of Christian Science, but Shays is a great American.
One of the truly brave Republicans able to stand for his principles, against the corruption and phony patriotism of the Bush Administration. I can easily see where a man with his intellect is questioning the nonsense that he was brought up in. One of the best people this country has in Washington, articulate, urbane and deeply concerned about our nation and his constituents. The way he talks and his faith in Christian Science never matched up in my obversations.
God Bless him and his family,

| Are we expected to believe anything a politician says between now and November? Especially a Republican who's been in office for over 20 years and is not a lawyer? And, has no family wealth behind him?

Suferforjesus, you said, "I am no fan of Christian Science, but Shays is a great American" and mentioned corruption and phony patrotism of the current administration. Please, please, please don't post political statements here. Maybe it is ok with all the others and the moderators, but I strongly disagree with (actually hate) what you wrote and can't respond because this just isn't the place for it in my opinion.

I agree, temperance.
Please refrain from posting political statements on these forums. This just isn't the place for them.
