| That was very nice of the CSists to set up that fund!

| It's gratifying to hear of this public boon from a CS source. I noticed these disbursements have been going on for 12 years. I also noticed no mention of CS property or real estate. So I conclude on these minimal facts that the Society had property, which was sold, and the proceeds went into a trust. And so we read of this year's beneficiaries. Here's my question, and perhaps TMCL or Erol can fill in the gaps: It is my understanding that whenever a branch church is dissolved, the real property reverts to The Mother Church. This seems to be an exception. Was the trust created from assets other than the society's real estate? Was the requirement for TMC to assume title to the property abrogated because this was a society? Is this policy no longer in effect? Or am I otherwise mistaken about the assignment of real property when all these branch churches are dissolved? That said, I must say I'm impressed with the range of civic organizations which benefited--especially the police!

followingHim,
My understanding of the situation is that, in the event of the dissolution of a Christian Science church or society, it is up to the church members themselves to decide what to do with its assets, subject to their own by-laws, trust conditions etc. and the law in force where they exist. Such laws vary from country to country.
Clearly it is desirable that the assets of any charitable organisation should, in the event of its dissolution, be disbursed as closely as possible in accordance with the wishes of the people who originally gave to that organisation--or at least what their wishes would be assumed to be if they were still around to voice them. But the extent to which that desideratum is built into law may vary from place to place--and I'm not a legal expert.
Hope that helps to clarify things a bit! NB I don't live in the US so there may be something relevant to US law that I'm unaware of on this.

| followingHim, I have never heard that there is any requirement that assets from a Christian Science church or society must go to The Mother Church when that church or society dissolves. It has always been my impression that the church or society can do what it wants with its assets under such circumstances.

| followingHim, In reading your post again, I want to add that I have never heard of any rule that The Mother Church assumes title to a branch church's property upon its dissolution.
