I am a narcissist and have lived very selfishly.  I almost killed one of my wifes sons when we were early in our marraige by inssisting on CS to heal him.  Lucky that my wife over my objections took him to the hospital, where he almost died.  I am a liar (make up my own reality), self centered, not deep feeling for others problems, no empthy, arragent, and controlling.  I have over come some of these problems, but not soon enough.  Are CSers narcissists by nature, those that were born into the cult.  I don't want our marriage to fail.  I have worked hard to change over the last 2 or 3 years, but it may be too late.

Thanks

ri olsen:

Christian Science does not explicitly espouse narcissism, of course, and superficially the system promotes things that are good. But as one becomes better at C.S. double-speak, however, I find that a Christian Scientist can justify almost anything, since there really is no "wrong", and supreme selfishness is all too easy to fall into. We're looking for the basis of C.S. ethics and morals in another thread, and cannot seem to find it.

But Christ teaches that things are never too late. He has also shown you the right direction in which to go - away from yourself, and toward self-sacrifice for others. In the end, the greatest thing we can do for ourselves is to lose ourselves - i.e., the incorrect selves we've falsely built up - and reconstruct ourselves in the mold of Christ Himself.

The one lost sheep is the one He is looking for most of all. You know the way - "Just Do It"! Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life; perhaps the best is yet to come.

I will pray for you!

ri olson,

No, I don't think that all CSists are narcissists. I do think, however, that CS fuels many of the behaviors and attitudes you mentioned (self delusion, the need to control, difficulty empathizing with others, etc.). These are natural outcomes of believing that the material world is an illusion and that one's experience reflects one's thinking. I've seen it over an over in CS, even in very nice people.

I will pray for you as you deal with these issues. I commend you for having the courage to recognize and work on them.

Thanks for the prayers. It has been a new day. God broke me down I bawled like a baby about my past life. He has worked in meraculous ways by having my wife's bible study address Jesus' desire for us to not spend time in the past but make a new future. We are doing much better, keep up the great work in prayer.

Einstein said once that a "problem well defined is a problem half-solved". You sound like you are well on your way toward health.

I will continue to pray for you!
