Hello, all.  I wanted to thank each of you for the thoughtful responses.  I did talk to my daughter and she understands.

My uncle is on his way out here to the boondocks as we speak.  He really feels like he must say something at this stage.  I emailed him Linda's comments and we have sort of picked through what we feel we can use.

I feel that she is worsening fairly fast now and I will keep y'all posted on how things are going.  I'm fixing to head around the corner so I can sit with her while Mom takes a shower.

I have a HUGE praise report to share with you.  My grandmother went to the hospital this morning.  I can't even begin to tell y'all how relieved I am.

My uncle drove out and had a very long talk with her and my mom.  They basically assured her that IF it was a terminal condition as she suspected, they would not ask her to seek any kind of treatment, but they would ensure that she was at least out of pain.  She kept insisting that she 'knew' it was terminal.  Mom just kept saying but what if it's not.  Of course once she decided to receive medical care she then told them the full extent of her illness and I knew why she was so frightened.  I was still fairly certain though that it was simple and treatable.  So far, the doctors agree with me.  They feel she has a bleeding ulcer which is what I suspected all along.  Granna thought she had a "belief" of colon cancer.

We will know more in the morning as she will have to have an ERCP to make sure that is what it is.  However, they are medicating it as if it is an ulcer and she already feels terrific.  Her color is great, her stomach no long kills her, etc.  All in all very good news, guys.  I can't thank you enough for all the prayers.

Excellent, Renee! That's great news.

Regarding the similar situation I was in, a friend of ours who is a geriatric specialist advised me that change is very difficult with the elderly. I think that I already knew that, but noting that change is difficult with even the average person of any age, it reminded me of how much more difficult it must be for a person late in life with diminished faculties. And changing religions is a change so big and fundamental that one would almost have to rethink their whole life. I imagine that she will always be a Christian Scientist.

At the same time, I can't help but think that perhaps there is a survival instinct that kicks in at some point. So she may have just subconsciously conceded to herself that she needs medical help, but she will never be able to admit that publicly or even consciously - she would lose face as a Christian Scientist.

Mary Baker Eddy did argue against compromise with "materia medica" - but fortunately her contradictory teachings also argue that matter cannot hurt you - in fact nothing can really hurt you if you don't think it can - including doctors! Drugs too, MBE most definitely stated that they are harmless if you don't believe in them. So I would continue to promote this line of though with her.

"Just humour us, and go to the doctor. Yes, of course you don't need to, but do it to make us all feel better." Or prove it's nothingness - or something like that.

But the fact that she went, and had a good result, is huge. Congratulations!

I'll say a prayer or two for follow through. God Bless,

Well, I wish that I could say the news continues to be good, but I cannot.

I was right about it being an ulcer, there is one, but it is on top of a huge tumor.  She has ignored sypmtoms of something being terribly wrong with her stomach for years.  80% of her stomach is now involved.  We are waiting on the pathology today.  The good news is that it appears to be completely contained to the stomach which the doctors are saying is miraculous.  I probably will no longer update the situation here as I would like to be respectful of the practicing CS's who come here to read.

Just keep the prayers coming our way, guys.

I'm sorry to hear that, Renee. That's a sad and typical CS behavior.

You have my prayers.

'Just one more thought, Renee:

Should you need any more persuasive energy, does she have a Christian Scientist friend that she respects? You might approach them, lay out the case as you see it, and see what they would do. I could be wrong, but I imagine that all but the most die-hard CSists today would shun medical treatment given a clear diagnosis like this.

I could be wrong, and perhaps it could backfire - but most C.S.ist are "practical" (their word for it), and in reality do sneak out to the doctor. A respected Christian Scientist would be a very powerful ally in this case.

You and your family are in my prayers!

[left]Just to ease your mind my grandmother has decided to receive whatever treatment the dr.'s deem necessary.  Once she made the commitment to receive medical care she went all the way.
