During a Bible study, our Pastor asked me what CS has to say about the second coming of Christ.  To the best of my recollection at this point, CS is supposed to BE the second coming, can someone confirm that belief for me?

I was always taught that and I come from several generations of class taught CS'ers.  I don't know if that is what they all believe though.

Definitely that is what they believe - I just read this in "Twelve Years with Mary Baker Eddy": "Jesus manifested the "first coming" of the Christ to mankind, and Mary Baker Eddy's discovery of Christian Science (the Comforter) has completely fulfilled the Biblical prophecy of the "second coming""

Also: "By her works Mary Baker Eddy stands before the world as the one through whom the prophecy of the "second coming"is fulfilled."

Pg 214, 215 of this book by Irving C. Tomlinson published by the Christian Science Publishing Society in 1945

Hope this helps!

I noticed that the book Brian mentioned is sold by the Christian Science Publishing Society on the spirituality website. Apparently, then, it is one sanctioned by the church.

We, too, were taught that CS was the Comforter, and Mrs. Eddy's 'discovery' marked the second coming.

Other than it meets none of the parameters of Biblical prophecy, why not believe Christian Science is the Second Coming? I know it sounds kind of snippy, however, if you otherwise reinterpret Scripture why not this as well?

Not to mention that Christian Science teaches it is "the Comforter" as well....

Although not officially endorsed by TMC, Christian Science Reading Rooms also carry Bliss Knapp's Book "The Destiny of the Mother Church", which likewise claims Mary Baker Eddy is the second coming of Christ.

There's a link to Eddy's own words:

The second appearing of Jesus is, unquestionably, the spiritual advent of the advancing idea of God, as in Christian Science.

There may be other relevant references, but I can't recall them at this time.

As a sidenote regarding this quotation, I thought I'd mention that this seems to be an example of one of the twenty "Scripture Twisting Methods of the Cults" provided by James Sire

http://www.apologeticsindex.org/b03.html

15. THE OBVIOUS FALLACY: Words like OBVIOUSLY, UNDOUBTEDLY, CERTAINLY, ALL REASONABLE PEOPLE HOLD THAT and so forth are substituted for logical reasons. Example: Erich von daniken says, "Undoubtedly the Ark [of the Covenent] was electrically charged!"

I was unsuccessful in doing a word search of http://christiansciencebooks.rolf-witzsche.com/, where you can acces all of Eddy's writings.  What I wanted to find in Prose Works went something like this:

"Various Bible scholars have computed that the Second Coming of Christ could well be in the latter half of the Nineteenth Century, the very time that I discovered Christian Science and Science and Health was written."

This is a praphrase of something I read a long time ago.  But If I have recalled it reasonably well, note the qualifications:  "various (unnamed) scholars" --what qualifications of scholarship, anyway?-- "have computed"  -- how? on what kind of chronology? and "could well be" --this is a very open-ended statement.

I enlist any Forum member with better search skills to try and locate this quote!

fH,

Here's the quote, which comes from Mrs. Eddy's "Message for 1900" in Prose Works:

"Some modern exegesis on the prophetic Scriptures cites 1875 as the year of the second coming of Christ. In that year the Chrisitian Science textbook, 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,' was first published." (Message for 1900, p.6:28-30)
