Dear nomoreCS4me
Sorry to hear how rough it was for you. Glad though that you found a place of refuge with someone who appreciated what and amazing thing you'd just done. That took guts, and I hope you've never been sorry. It was the truly courageous thing to do. Somehow, I find there's good from airing out our worst memories.
My mom was the one who taught me differently. I guess she wasn't afraid to be radical in more ways than Mrs Eddy intended. She encountered a good CSP with the common sense of a farmer, and the innocence of a monk. He acted like her confessor, by phone, though neither one knew what one was. And he answered her questions, and gave insights on her inspirations. She actually found out that if you held a negative attitude towards the body and its functions -including sex- you or someone you loved wound up sick! So she learned to hold the body as neutral, or natural. I can't explain it better at the moment, and certainly don't feel like putting it in CS terms at the moment. Hope you don't mind.
Anyway, she got through to all 4 of us kids, so I wasn't under the burden of excessive old school modesty. She let us play in the rain, and have fun in hail storms, and play in the gentle rapids, and stay out for hours in the snow. Years later, when it came time for my kids to be born, lets just say, God was there. The midwives -and later the doc & nurses- knew it too. The miracle of new life looks like a window into heaven.
The human body was never a reason for shame; and yes we had enough modesty to be normal for our day. I guess I never realized how much I was spared by Mom's strides and inspirations. A modern doctor, an OB/GYN, Scott Farhart, is also a Christian and he wrote about exactly such issues. I'd recommend his book, Intimate & Unashamed, for anyone who has wanted to hear a healthy approach. In fact, I had lent it to my son first, and expect to lend it to my daughter. If they have a healthy approach in place first, they're less likely to fall prey to the forlorn version that the world is selling. In medical knowledge, I've found his writing adequate; and he isn't negligent in his Christianity either. I have to respect that. That's more of a challenge for doctors and nurses than many know.
