Dear Do Go,

Agree, a dedicated CSist may be put off by anything that is openly against CS, saying "former CSists", etc. But I am sure they would not refuse any bible citations. Therefore, I would prefer bible verses giving the message and a reference to this site etc.

Do_Go,

I like your ideas for what the postcard should say and also the thought that it could be mailable. Is their some way that we could let people know that we are not promoting a new church or cult ourselves? Somehow include the message that this is just an informational site only -- that it is FREE and can be accessed anonymously?

A good bold question that would catch their attention might be good, too. Something like: "Have you found the Scientific Statement of Being in the Bible?" Then in small print, "Neither have we." Something that would catch the eye, yet not be too confrontational or off-putting.

The lawyer in me of course has to ask: Do we need the permission of Christian Way first in order to advertise their site?

Is anyone familiar with this series: Christian Science: Right or Wrong?

It might be interesting to see what is has to say, and if it is useful for what you all are talking about.

Hi,

Is there someone in the UK who can use the 'buy it now' option for the 'Christian Science: Right or Wrong?' brochure on eBay/UK? I did a quick web search and this seems way, way out-of-print and perhaps it's contents could be as useful as the Max Wertheimer article.

DGBM; I can see the wisdom in being 'up front', but not confrontational in the card. I like your suggestions about the tagline and statement of faith on a postcard size. Could you make something rough and then we'll have an idea to work with. If we start with direct quotes/content from the CW site then we could tweak it later.

Who would we contact about permission to use the site logo etc - Linda?

Hi Dug,

I'll look into the ebay/UK-thing. I can probably do that from Germany. Will get back to you as soon as I'll know more.

Mike Benjamin would have to give that permission.

Let's keep this a brainstorming session for a while rather than moving to the print stage. I'm enjoying reading people's ideas.

Re: "flier" and "flyer":

Jungle Girl, good catch. Editing and copy have to be perfect. No exaggeration. We can have our boo-boos on posts, but not here.

Carolyn Poole, that wonderful saint who founded CW, once said to me (paraphrase), "We have to be very careful with our printing, the quality of (paper) stock, and what we write. Christian Scientists are so use to the high standards of the Publishing Society, which does everything just right. If there are typos or sloppiness anywhere, Scientists don't look at it, and just dismiss it as the ill-considered rantings of some bunch of mindless zealots."

Hi Dug,

regarding the US-Ebay thing: I checked with the seller, and he'll ship to Germany. So I'll buy it today.

To all:

Just yesterday a few things came back to mind, from my time still in CS and still convinced of it:

I was "absorbed" that CS is superior, and when reading other Christian materials or attending anything "only Christian", I felt it was ok as I had considered CS to be Christian BUT I always felt that I had "more than the other visitors". I may have mentioned that I had Christian friends. For years, they kept praying for me and invited me over to several Christian activities. And for years, I shared with them Journal copies, full text lesson sermons, was proud to send them a copy of the video on the opening of this new library at TMC etc. etc. They were careful in their comments to me, but obviously did give me remarks like "It's always strange if Jesus is barely ever mentioned ..." I had kind of forgotten it but when I thought of it yesterday, I was reminded just how misled I had been yet convinced of knowing it all. I also remember that, whenever I heard or read about criticism of CS - such as information on the child death court cases in the US - I was very quick at dismissing it as "not loyal, fell away, just didn't understand the truth, or especially with regards to failed healings: just look at the mess the medical profession does at times" (knowing that doctors don't always help, from my pre-CS times). I was then so very arrogant I wouldn't even check things that were somehow critical of or against CS!

Unfortunately, the understanding of many CSists is just as strange as mine used to be, and it's difficult to get through to them. It will be easier when people have already begun to doubt CS, but it may still be a long way. Here I feel that CSists who "found" it just I had had, may be more difficult to reach than lifetime CSists who occasionally wondered if CS was in fact the truth.

What occurs to me today, to be the most important message is that:

Jesus is indeed our Saviour and needs to be accepted as such. But also the fact that he died for our sins, that every human is a sinner - the very basic truths from the bible which S&H distorts and which make the difference between a life saved or unsaved.

Bearing in mind the double "protection" CSists have against the truth, i.e. the MBE brainwash AND the automatism of "unseeing error and replacing it with the truth", I would focus on something no CSist would really refuse: Bible verses. Though that may not hit home that moment, a bible verse that is well received will kind of stay with that person. That needs to be with some reference to more information such as this website etc. But it must be presented so that the CS does not shut that out immediately.

Here's what appear to be the essentials of our brainstorming thus far:

  • Post card
  • Bible focus
  • Directs readers to the CW web site
  • Not openly critical of CS
  • Must be high quality in content, design, and media
  • CW logo use must be approved by Mike Benjamin

Marion's message this morning inspired me to gather the following:

Jesus (said) to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
    John 8:31-32 (KJV)

...from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
    2 Timothy 3:15-17 (KJV)

If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing...
    1 Timothy 6:3-4 (ESV)

Jesus said ... "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
    John 14:6 (ESV)

A couple of questions came up in my mind (besides passage 3 probably being too confrontational), should we quote only from the KJV? Should we include only full verses?
