Just came accross a website from a "Mary Baker Eddy Institute" (http://www.mbeinstitute.org/index2.html), by a Helen Wright. Has online versions of S&H and all other MBE writings and church manual. In looking at it briefly, it appears to be in opposition to TMC because of "breaches of the church manual", and wants to go back to the CS MBE found. Has nothing of the "new age like" appearance of spirituality.com, and appears to be very well designed. Might feel attracted to it if I didn't know it better by now.

This is the great divide: the "progressives" who will integrate CS with "modern spirituality" (look for words like "evolving spirituality") vs the Christian Science Fundamentalists, and no, that's not an oxymoron!

I don't think there is a resolution. Each one will grow only at the expense of the other.

I expect tmcl* to weigh in on this at some length!

*Now that we have you identifying your posts at the bottom, maybe we'll talk you into a bonafide username nest!

After reading Marion's post about the MBE Institute I thought immediately, 'we'll hear from fH about this one.'

We did, but not in the form I imagined. Why would a guy who 'buries MBE stuff inside the recyling basket so it won't accidently be read,' add to this thread to perpetuate Satan's word? I have to admit I printed out Letter No. Seventeen.

In fact, I'm surprised Linda didn't delete it all together.

Does anyone know who Helen Wright is? Have you ever heard of her before?

The only thought that comes to me when seeing her website (upon a quick glance), is that Helen Wright is all wrong!

Little bit of pun there -- I just couldn't resist! I, too, am awaiting input from tcml on this one. . . . The internet seems to bring out all sorts of things, doesn't it? If one wasn't confused about religion before, they certainly will be after spending a few hours just looking things up on the computer. What a menu!

Makes me want to throw the thing (computer) out and head to a deserted island with my Bible for about 10 years. Maybe upon returning, I'd have it all figured out!

Grace,

Helen Wright died just last month. Her claim to fame was her belief that since some Manual By-Laws required Mrs. Eddy's signature for certain actions to be taken, that Mrs. Eddy's death should have essentially shut down The Mother Church as we know it today. However, according to the MBE Library, MBE contacted a lawyer before her death and was given the assurance that legally, when a required signature cannot be obtained, that the power of that signature passes to the next in command -- in this case, The Christian Science Board of Directors. Also, the historical evidence available in biographies shows that toward the end of her life, when MBE was asked to sign off on a decision, she would do so, but tell the Board that they must take responsibility for their own actions. She appeared to be weaning them away from relying on her personally for guidance. Also, I've read Mrs. Eddy's will and there are things in it that to me do not make sense if she wanted TMC to stop functioning at her death.

Helen Wright promoted her views on other aspects of CS as well, some of which can be discerned by studying her website.

Curious that she died... was she an elderly lady?

Wonder if medicine could have prevented her death?

Anyone could live to be 150 or longer now days with enough tubes and needles and chemicals injected into every orifice.

SurferforJesus,

Helen Wright's website gives her date of birth June 6, 1906 and her date of death as April 12, 2005.
